What a 503A pharmacy is

A 503A compounding pharmacy prepares medication for one patient from a prescription. Here is what that does and does not tell you.

What it means

  • Licensed and inspected by the state board of pharmacy where it operates.
  • Licensed in the states it ships to.
  • Sterile preparations, such as injections, must meet the USP <797> standard.

What it does not mean

  • Compounded medications are not FDA approved.
  • The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed.
  • A compounded medication is not a generic version of a brand-name drug.
